CHENNAI: India’s rise as a developed country hinges on its per capita consumption of electricity which is bound to increase after the Koodankulam reactor is commissioned, R Chidambaram, Principal Scientific Advisor to the Union Government, said here on Tuesday. Addressing a gathering of students and faculty on the occasion of Research Day celebrations at SRM University, Dr Chidambaram said that the country required to up its per capita consumption of power by at least six to eight times, in order to reach a level to be recognised as a developed nation. The Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant, once commissioned, would add excess of 900 MW of electricity to the Tamil Nadu grid catering to at least four million people. He said India was striving for the best in terms of research and development along with international cooperation. D Narayana Rao, Director-Research, SRM University, said, “Every University requires a greater collaborative research with the other institutions for sharing knowledge.”He also said that institutions should have sufficient infrastructure to provide a playing field for innovations. Students of SRM University, he said, had submitted 42 projects and the University had allotted `25 crore for research activities.’Also, 850 papers were presented on Research Day on Tuesday and the best papers would be given away prizes.T R Pachamuthu, Chancellor, SRM University, said, “All the teachers should be creative workers who should pay more attention on research values. Unless teachers come forward, the quality of research will never increase. Also, every university’s value, fame, good name and everything relies on the development of R & D there.”Among those present were M Ponnavaikko, Vice Chancellor, SRM university, Surendar Paul, Research scientist, ISRO, and Thangarajan, Pro-Vive-chancellor-Medical, SRM Uuniversity.
