As the bottling plants of major oil companies face supply crisis, customers say that it would make life harder for them...

KOCHI: Customers are facing immense hardships following the breakdown at Indian Oil Corporation’s main bottling plant and the crisis at the bottling units of HPCL and BPCL, with household routines going almost haywire. “The issue is very serious and would upset the apple cart of normal life,” Ernakulam District Residents Apex Council president Rangadasa Prabhu said.“The crisis is getting worse and the district administration will have to immediately intervene,” he said and added that the council would be meeting the District Collector on Friday. Stating that since all the residents living in the city depend on cooking gas, he reitetated that if the crisis is not dealt with stringently, the situation would worsen.Sources at Civil Supplies revealed that they have asked the government to take action against the agitating lorry owners under ESMA and Essential Commodities Act. The government is learnt to have intimated the collectors to take action on the basis of the recommendation given by the Civil Supplies Dept.Though Indian Oil Corporation’s bottling plant at Udayamperoor has been shut down, the bottling plants of HPCL and BPCL in Kochi do not face the same hitch as they are served by pipelines. However, HPCL Manager Sales, Tajib said that the plant at Palakkad had been affected. Because of this, supplies to the northern parts of the state are being met by the Kochi plant. But if the current situation prolongs, there could be a major crisis in two or three days. BPCL territory manager (LPG) Manoj said that there was no problem in the Kochi plant but it could happen at the T’Puram plant if the present crisis continued.
