HYDERABAD: Chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy wants an emergency service, on the lines of the successful 108 service, to be set up by the police department to receive distress calls from people and dispatch immediate help.Kiran Kumar Reddy on Friday told director general of police V Dinesh Reddy to work on the idea and come up with a plan to establish such a service in Hyderabad and Cyberabad police commissionerates.Speaking at a meeting of senior police officers at the DGP's office here on Friday, Kiran Kumar Reddy said the state government was keen to introduce a toll-free number in the police department to receive complaints and respond to them as soon as possible."After we received great response for the 108 emergency health service, we felt the idea should also be introduced in the police department for the benefit of the people. Initially, we will introduce the service in the Hyderabad and Cyberabad police commissionerates as pilot projects," he said.When people approach police stations seeking help, the personnel should respond in such a way that it would build confidence among the people on the police department.The department should train the newly appointed officers in handling various issues."The police are facing new challenges like cyber crime, terrorism and extremist activities. Every policeman should be able to tackle sensitive issues," the chief minister said.Lauding the efforts of the state police, he said the Centre had cited the Andhra Pradesh Police Service as the best example in curbing extremist activities and advised other states to follow the new strategies being implemented by the AP Police in this regard.DGP V Dinesh Reddy said crime against women and murders increased this year while the crime rate remained unchanged compared with previous years.The police, however, made significant arrests this year and among those nabbed were wanted terrorists.
