Against the backdrop of worm-infested food found from the KFC outlet in Thiruvananthapuram, the Food Safety Officers also collected samples from the KFC outlet at MG Road here. The officials further examined the hygiene conditions at the outlet’s kitchen and pantry.
The lack of hygiene that led to the closure of a KFC outlet at Thiruvananthapuram took a majority of KFC lovers by surprise. Some of them who frequent the outlets here expressed the hope that the KFC will take steps to prevent it from happening again, while the other regulars said that the incident is against KFC’s operating standards and is totally unacceptable.
“Food safety is a serious concern for people like me who depend on restaurants and other food outlets regularly. But the information that even multinational brands like KFC are unsafe is really shocking. The government should seriously carry out a full-fledged investigation in this regard and ensure that every eatery is compliant to the Food Safety Act,” said Arun Madhav, dispatch manager at Jit and Jit Gloves.
However, irrespective of the raids, both KFC outlets here did brisk business on Monday evening.
“The situation here is normal and the business has not been affected by the incident that occurred at the Thiruvananthapuram outlet. There is no possibility of finding a worm as the food is heated at about 360 degrees. The result of the sample test will unveil the truth,” an official at the KFC outlet said.
When asked about the incident, some of the customers were unaware of the fact that worm-infested fried chicken had been served at their favourite outlet in the capital ! Sivakumar Nair, a KFC fan said that it is a one-off incident.
“I am a regular visitor at the KFC outlets here and in Bangalore. So far, I haven’t noticed any hygiene issues with regard to the food served at the KFC outlets. However, KFC should learn a lesson from the incident and make sure that such incidents will not happen in the future,” said Sivakumar, a Kochiite who is working with a software firm in Bangalore.
Meanwhile, Sreenath, an employee with a private bank said such incidents will result in loss of faith in the brand.“Being an international brand, I thought KFC had high standards. But Monday’s incident proved that I was wrong,” he said.
Meera Nair, a computer programmer from Kochi, said that she came to KFC in spite of hearing the news about the food quality at the Thiruvananthapuram outlet. “For the last five years, I have been a frequent visitor to KFC outlet. I have never had a bad experience of being served stale or wormed-infested food here,” she said.
