The CBI court on Thursday dismissed CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan’s plea to split the SNC-Lavalin case into two in order to facilitate a speedy trial.
However, it gave two more months’ time to the Central Bureau of Investigation to arrest Klaus Triendl, the sixth accused in the case and former vice-president of Canadian firm Lavalin.
The court said that it would take a decision later if the CBI failed to nab Triendl within the allotted time.
Pinarayi, the seventh accused, wanted the case against Klaus Triendl and SNC Lavalin, the ninth accused, to be treated as a separate one. He had filed a petition before the court seeking to start the trial of the other accused in the case as he did not want to wait indefinitely for its comm encement.
His counsel had argued that the CBI was deliberately delaying the trial by not executing the warrant of Triendl issued by the court.
CBI Judge T S P Moosath also took notice of the prosecution’s plea that the trial can begin only after Triendl’s arrest as he is one of the key accused.
The CBI is facing a delay in arresting Triendl as he is a Canadian citizen and there are hurdles in getting him extradited.
