Kerala Maha Ganapathy Temple Finds A Dedicated Guardian In Retired Sub-inspector

The southern region of India is renowned for its rich cultural heritage and the presence of ancient temples that attract devotees from far and wide seeking divine blessings. Among these temples, nestled in the picturesque landscapes of Kerala, lies the Maha Ganapathy Temple in Thuravoor, Alappuzha. With a storied history spanning over 270 years, this temple holds a unique distinction – it is situated close to the Alappuzha District Jail.

Previously, the temple was under the care of the Coast Guard Division, with oversight provided by the commandant and administrative police. However, despite its close association with law enforcement, the temple’s rituals were traditionally conducted by external priests. This changed when Sankaran Namboothiri, a member of the force, joined the ranks and demonstrated his proficiency in conducting the temple’s sacred rites.

Initially met with scepticism from his superiors, Sankaran Namboothiri swiftly dispelled doubts about his ability to fulfil his duties both within the force and as a temple priest. His early training in puja rituals under his father, Shambhu Namboothiri, a respected priest affiliated with the Kerala Devaswom Board, equipped him with the necessary skills and knowledge.

Reports indicate that Sankaran Namboothiri commenced his service as a constable in 1986, stationed initially at the Nandavanam AR Camp in Thiruvananthapuram before relocating to the Alappuzha AR Camp in 1990. Despite his demanding office responsibilities, Sankaran diligently assumed the additional role of overseeing the temple’s operations. From opening the gates at dawn to conducting morning and evening pujas, he ensured the smooth functioning of the sacred space for devotees.

Even upon his retirement as a sub-inspector in 2018, Sankaran Namboothiri continues to serve as the head priest of the Maha Ganapathy Temple. Remarkably, throughout his tenure in the force, he received no additional compensation for his services to the temple, demonstrating his dedication to both his professional duties and religious obligations.
