Thiruvananthapuram: A patient died allegedly due to wrong blood transfusion at the Thiruvananthapuram medical college in Kerala, a state that boasts of high health standards. The police have registered a case based on the complaint of the patient's relatives.
Sreekumar underwent a bypass surgery at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College last Wednesday. He was shifted to the cardio thoracic ICU after the surgery. His family alleges that he was administered with the wrong blood on Friday evening.
The unfortunate Sreekumar's brother Anilkumar said, "His blood group was O negative but on Friday they gave him O positive. His wife was a nurse and she saw that he was shaking his hand badly and alerted the staff there. It was then that they found that the blood was of different group. At least 150 ml was administered by then, but they argued that they had not yet started transfusing blood. His condition worsened after this."
The relatives added that the duty nurse at that time is responsible for this mix up and the only PG doctor present at that time did not even respond properly. However, hospital authorities said that though a different blood group was brought in it was not transfused as the staff found it was a different group.
Giving a clean chit to the staff, the hospital Superintendent K Mohandas said, "Though a different blood group was brought it was not transfused to the person. He earlier had liver problems; he died due to liver failure, kidney failure and multitude of issues. An enquiry is going on to find out if there is any mistake."
The police have registered a case based on the complaint of the relatives and the postmortem will be conducted by a team of doctors. Health Minister VS Sivakumar had asked for a report on this issue and said that strict action will be taken if they find negligence on the part of the hospital staff.
