Mumbai: Olympic gold medallist middle distance runner Kelly Holmes is set to fly to India for a visit early next year as brand ambassador of the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon.

Holmes won a unique double at the Athens Olympics in 2004 when she won golds at the 800 and 1500 metres. She would arrive in Mumbai a week prior to promote the event through media interactions and encouraging people to participate.

"I am excited to be in Mumbai for the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon and hope my presence will inspire young athletes in India to work and train harder," Holmes said according to a release by event promoters Procam International.

Kelly Homes is only the third woman athlete to achieve the double feat.

Prior to Homes, the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon has been promoted by a series of famous athletes like Paul Tergat, Steve Ovett, Michael Johnson, Mike Powell, Linford Christie and India's Anju Bobby George.

Former India cricket stars Kapil Dev and Javagal Srinath have also been part of the event's promotion.
