Guwahati: Kaziranga National Park, famous across the world for its one-horned rhino, has been declared the third tiger reserve in Assam under Project Tiger.
Assam's Chief Wildlife Warden M C Malakar said in Guwahati on Wednesday that the Centre had declared this world heritage site a tiger reserve on Saturday but the state forest department received the intimation only on Tuesday.
The new status will help the park in getting additional funds and the state government will soon submit schemes to the Project Tiger authority in this regard.
Malakar said a formal notification demarcating the boundary of the tiger reserve, which will have a core and a buffer area, will be issued soon along with other relevant details.
Declaring the park a tiger reserve will also boost conservation efforts in Assam, he said.
The two other tiger reserves in Assam are Manas and Nameri National Parks. According to the 2000 census, Kaziranga had 86 tigers, Manas 65 and Nameri 26.
