ALAPPUZHA: Heated exchanges between Water Resource Minister P J Joseph and Kodikunnil Suresh MP marred the Kuttanad Package review meeting held at the Rice Research Institute Auditorium Mankombu here on Monday. After the exchange of words between the minister and the MP, the Congress and Kerala Congress workers engaged in another brawl which disrupted the meeting. The Congress activists shouted slogans against Joseph. The MLAs and leaders rescued the minister from the mob. After the clash, the meeting was wound up.After the minister left the venue, the Congress activists and CPM men engaged in another clash. Later the police arrived on the spot and dispersed the mob. The discord between the minister and the MP erupted during the discussion on the AC canal maintenance under the Kuttanad Package. Kodikkunnil was angered by the Minister’s suggestion to build another canal through the paddyfield parallel to AC canal. The MP opposed the minister’s suggestion and said it would lead to agitations similar to the Mullaperiyar issue. The reference to Mullaperiyar provoked the minister and it led to heated exchanges between the two. The Congress and Kerala Congress workers also joined the melee. MLAs Thomas Chandy and C K Sadasivan rescued the minister from the fury of the mob.
