New Delhi: ELECTED local body leaders of Jammu & Kashmir on Saturday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and requested him to take a personal initiative to restore peace in the state that has been marred by violence for around four months now.
A 30-member delegation of the All Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Conference (JKPC), which is an apex body of Panchayat leaders of the State of Jammu and Kashmir, also expressed concern over the series of school burnings that has been happening in the state.
"The majority of the people want peaceful and dignified life in the State. Vested interests have exploited youngsters and are playing with their lives and future," JKPC chairman Shafiq Mir said.
Mir said that his organisation that was founded in 2012 has itself been a victim of Pakistan-sponsored terror.
"Viewing our campaign for democracy against their interests and policy, the terrorists started attacks on us during which our 14 Sarpanches have been killed so far and more than two dozen were left injured in different attacks," he said.
The organisation also submitted a memorandum to the PM demanding holding polls for panchayat and urban local bodies in the state after implementing 73rd and 74th amendments of Indian Constitution.
The memorandum also requested details of the money that he central government has given to state leaders in the past 70 years and demanded to know if "that money has gone to the pockets of ruling class only why they have not been prosecuted and made accountable like other politicians of the country."
The PM assured the delegation that he will look into their demands. He mentioned that growth and development of J&K figures high on his agenda since growth of villages, where majority of people live, is important to the overall economic development of J&K.
