In view of the scathing criticism the institution has come under following the suicide of a daily rated labourer on September 5, the JIPMER administration formed a Joint Action Committee for Protection of JIPMER (JACPJ), comprising JIPMER Faculty Association (JFA), Resident Doctors Association (RDA) and JIPMER Students Association (JSA) here on Saturday.
In its first press release, the committee condemned the “false accusations hurled at the JIPMER director by anti-social elements”. Since the matter had been duly informed to the police and legal formalities were underway, there was no reason for anyone to continue a slander campaign against the director and defame JIPMER, the JACPJ said.
The committee pointed out that JIPMER had been providing free medical care to all and had started collecting a nominal fee from those with an income of above Rs 2,500 a month on recent instructions from the Centre, after incorporating it into the JIPMER Act. Though JIPMER had issued a circular in this regard, the fee was being only collected from patients whose self-declared income was more than Rs 2,500 per month. However, some miscreants misinterpreted and exaggerated the issue in order to achieve political mileage, the release said. Their intimidating actions like bringing of a mob inside the campus and interfering with the administration has upset the patient care services resulting in the formation of JACPJ, it added.
The JACPJ, in its release, signed by JFA president Dr Ravindran, assured the committee’s whole-hearted support to the administration in its efforts to improve patient-care service. It also urged the administration to initiate action against those who are “disturbing the peaceful and productive working atmosphere of JIPMER”.
