CHENNAI: Reviving the Tamil Nadu Arasu Cable TV Coproration Limited, which was made defunct during the previous DMK regime, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Friday launched the service in all districts except in Chennai where conditional access system is in force.Jayalalithaa had proposed to nationalise cable TV business in her 2001-06 regime, but her attempt could not succeed as the then Governor refused to give his assent to the Bill on the ground that the subject comes under the Centre’s purview. In the April 13 Assembly elections, Jayalalithaa made it an electroal promise to end the monopoly in cable TV business and to nationalise it. On Friday, she fulfilled yet another major poll promise by offering 90 channels for `70 per month.Launching the services through video conferencing facility from the Fort St George, the CM said with this move, the “monopoly of a single family” in this business has come to an end. The AIADMK government has ensured that the people get cable TV services at a very lower price of just Rs 70 per month. Now they could save around Rs 70 to Rs 100. So far, 34,344 cable operators and MSOs who have at present 1.45 crore connections, have registered themselves with the TACTV.Sujatha Chandran from Vellore told the CM that so far, they had to cough up Rs 100 to Rs 200 for getting Cable TV connections. Now, that the cable TV business has been nationalised, the services were available at `70 per month which would be helpful for the poor.Saravana Kumar, a cable TV operator from Vellore district said the government had literally freed the cable TV operators from the clutches of autocratic MSOs and the pay channels. IT Minister RB Udayakumar and top officials of the department took part.
