Jayalalithaa asks Modi to declare TN floods as national calamity
Many residents in rain battered Chennai alleged that the local administration did not adequately addressed their problems.

Chennai: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Wednesday has asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to declare the unprecedented floods in Chennai a "national calamity".

In her letter to Modi, Jayalalithaa requested the PM to consider the matter at the earliest because many households have lost their lives and savings.

Though no heavy rains have been reported in the last two days, it drizzled throughout the night on Tuesday. With massive relief operations underway, fear of epidemics is now looming large over the city.

Authorities have now shifted their focus on clearing garbage and sludge from roads. Several parts of the city including Tambaram, Semmanchery, Manali continue to be waterlogged but despite that normal transport services are back on track.

CNN-IBN learned that red-tape has delayed a request to deal with the issue of water release from the Chembarambakkam reservoir. It was due to release of water from the reservoir, areas along the Adyar River banks was flooded and caused a massive devastation.

For the last few days, Chennai is slowly limping back to normalcy with restoration of electricity, telecommunication, train connectivity and availability of essential items in many parts of Tamil Nadu.

Several subways including Duraisamy, Nanganallur Thillai Ganga Nagar, St. Thomas Mount etc in Chennai have reopened brining much relief to the commuters. Also, all the three subways close to Pazhavanthangal and Adambakkam became motorable.

The rescue work was being spearheaded by various agencies but people in many localities claimed that the local administration did not adequately address their problems.

Meanwhile, DMK Chief Karunanidhi visits the flood affected areas and distributed some relief materials to the affected people.

The death toll has now rose to 324.
