CHENNAI: A day before the conduct of indirect elections to over 14,000 posts in various local bodies in the State, AIADMK chief and Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Friday announced her party’s candidates for the posts of deputy mayors in all 10 municipal corporations.The AIADMK leader fielded women candidates for the post of mayor in six Corporations. For the post of deputy mayor, she has fielded male candidates for all the 10 Corporations.While B Benjamin would be the party’s nominee for the Chennai Deputy Mayor’s post, Azhick Meera, son of deceased minister Mariam Pitchai is her choice from the Tiruchy Corporation. Nominees for other corporations are: M Natesan (Salem), K C Palanisamy (Erode), S Gunasekaran (Tirupur), N Chinnadurai (Coimbatore), R Gopalakrishnan (Madurai), P Ganesan (Tirunelveli), P Xavier (Tuticorin) and V T Dharmalingam (Vellore).Jayalalithaa also announced candidates for the posts of 31 district panchayat board presidents, panchayat union presidents, vice presidents, deputy chairmen for municipalities and town panchayats.In some places, Independents will play a key role in electing candidates of various political parties to these top posts. Meanwhile, there were complaints that alleged that Independent candidates have been ‘kidnapped’ in certain places to ensure the victory.
