Jaya hikes paddy MSP by Rs 70
Direct procurement centres to be opened in delta regions

Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Friday hiked the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for procurement of paddy from farmers in the State, over and above the amount fixed by the Centre.

The CM also directed the District Collectors of the Cauvery delta areas to provide permission to the Civil Supplies Corporation authorities to open direct paddy procurement centres as per the prevailing requirements, wherever the yield was higher. The Centre has fixed the MSP for the October 2012-September 2013 Kharif season at Rs 1,250 and Rs 1,280 per quintal for ordinary and fine varieties of paddy respectively, the CM said. Recalling that the government headed by her has been providing additional MSP over and above the amount fixed by the Centre to encourage the farmers, she said that for the current season too, an additional RS 50 and Rs 70 per quintal would be provided for ordinary and fine varieties respectively.

With this, the farmers would get a MSP of Rs 1,300 for ordinary variety of paddy and Rs 1,350 for the fine variety. The CM said that in the districts other than the delta areas, paddy procurement centres would be opened by the Civil Supplies Corporation, Cooperative Societies and Cooperative banks.
