New Delhi: Forty six Indians are currently stuck in the city of Tikrit, where Iraq security forces are engaged in a fight with ISIS terrorists, said sources on Monday. Iraq is currently gripped in a civil war between the Iraq army and Sunni terrorists.
Another 40 Indians are also trapped in the city of Mosul which is currently under ISIS control. There are no government agencies operating in these cities.
The Indian embassy officials have been coordinating with international agencies to assess the situation and check whether Indian citizens can travel safely. The two closest airports are Baghdad and Erbil, in the semi-autonomous region of Kurdistan.
The MEA had on Sunday issued an advisory asking Indians to refrain from unnecessary travel inside Iraq. There are 15 to 17 thousand Indians in the country.
