Beijing: India's big medal hopes in shooting have had a disappointing start at the Beijing Olympics.
Shooters Samresh Jung, Anjali Vedpathak Bhagwat and Avneet Kaur Sidhu have crashed out of the competition with the first gold medal of the Games going to the Czech Republic much to the disappointment of hosts China.
Jung was shown the door on the first day of the shooting competition. He was dumped out of the 10 meter air pistol competition managing to shoot 570 out of a maximum of 600 points to finish well below the field in 42nd place.
Wei Peng of China qualified on top with 586 points. Jung, who won five gold medals at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, will also be taking part in the men's 50 meter pistol, which will take place on August 12.
The Indian women shooters fared no better with both Anjali and Avneet failing to qualify for the finals of the women's 10m air rifle event.
Anjali, participating in her third Olympics failed yet again, finishing 29th managing to score 393/400 while Avneet scored 389/400 to finish 39th in the qualification round.
Katerina Emmons of the Czech Republic ended up winning the first gold of the Games
In judo, too, India's Khumujam Tombi Devi lost in the preliminary round of the 48kg category to Ana Hormigo of Portugal.
Tombi Devi bowed out in the first round itself. She along with Divya Tewar are the only judokas representing India at the Beijing Games.
Indian archers also started badly. Dola Banerjee, who won a gold at the World Cup in Doha in 2007, and Laishram Bombalya Devi are also out of the competition.
Banerjee finished 31st with a score of 633 while Devi managed to do better than her more pedigreed opponent.
She scored 637 points to end up in 22nd place.
There was, however, some good news for India in men's single sculls rowing where Bajrang Lal Thakar reached the quarter-finals.
