A Chinese official said India and China should join hands to promote healthcare in the two countries.

New Delhi: India and China should join hands to promote healthcare in the two countries and this can begin with a doctors' exchange programme, an official of the Chinese Embassy said in Delhi on Saturday.

"Healthcare is an important issue for both India and China and both the countries must join hands in this field. A doctors' exchange programme can be a right first step in this direction," First Secretary, Science and Technology of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China, Cao Jiangru said.

"Both the countries are already collaborating in the field of agriculture and traditional medicine," Jiangru said on the sidelines of a function at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH).

He said since the current year has been termed as the Indo-China friendship year, such an initiative will certainly bring both nations closer.

SGRH, a leading private hospital in Delhi, is co-organising the second International Stroke Summit from August 17-20 in Nanjing, in collaboration with the International Stroke Society, Jingling Hospital and Nanjing Medical Association.

Jiangru was at the hospital to talk about the objectives of the summit.

"This is the first time that an Indian private hospital is co-hosting an international health summit in China. The summit that will see leading doctors in the field of interventional neurology will deliberate on the use of new technology in stroke management," Chairman, Board of Management, SGRH, B K Rao said.

Rao added that SGRH would explore the possibility of a doctors' exchange programme with China during the four-day event.

Shakir Husain, a leading interventional neurologist, will lead the Indian team to the summit.

"Both India and China can learn from each other. Since both the countries are evolving superpowers, a collaboration will certainly be beneficial," Husain said.

He said that acupuncture and rehabilitation practices are two other areas where he would like to focus during the summit.
