Curfew is re-imposed in two towns of Rajasthan following protests over the farmer death after baton charge by police.

Jaipur: Curfew has been re-imposed in two towns of Rajasthan following protests over the death of a farmer injured in a baton charge by the police.

"We have imposed an indefinite curfew in Ghadsana and Rawla towns (in Sri Ganganagar district) since late night on Wednesday as a precautionary measure. We are reviewing the situation," Inspector General of Police (Law and Order), Navdeep Singh, said.

The situation was tense as hundreds of farmers marched towards the village of the deceased Chandu Ram.

"We will not think of the consequences, we are here to support the family," said a leader of the Kisan Mazdoor Vyapari Sangarsh Samiti (KMVSS), which has been spearheading an agitation for release of more water in the area.

He said the KMVSS wants the state government to provide a compensation of Rs 5,00,000 to the family of Chandu Ram and a job to one of the family members.

Hundreds of farmers have been protesting in parts of Sri Ganganagar district for over a fortnight demanding more water for irrigation.

Curfew was imposed and the army called October 16 as the farmers in Ghadsana became violent and fought a pitched battle with the police in which over 100 people were injured.

However, with the situation improving, the day curfew had been lifted in the past couple of days.

Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje had on Wednesday held a high-level meeting in which she discussed the law-and-order situation in the Ghadsana and Rawla areas.

Home Minister Gulab Chand Kataria has, however, said Chandu Ram was not killed in the baton charge.

"He was discharged merely two hours after he was admitted in the hospital. He was found fit in the initial check up by the doctors," Kataria said. The government has claimed Chandu Ram died of cardiac arrest.

Two years ago, clashes between farmers and the police in Sri Ganganagar had led to police firing which left eight farmers dead.
