A sweet shop named Dia Dai Bhandar is currently hitting the headlines for introducing a new variety of Bengali Shingara. According to Local 18 Bengal, it is the only shop in Mahadevpur village, Old Malda, West Bengal where the natives can find a different flavour of the Bengali Shingara. After the shop gained popularity, people from not only Malda but from other places as well visited this shop to savour the luscious snack. The Shingara cooked here is filled with cheese, paneer and other seasonal vegetables instead of potatoes. Shop owner Raja Ghosh said that the cheese-filled Bengali Shingara has become one of the major attractions of his shop. Along with cheese, he said that there are different types of vegetables included in the snack. Raja said that he makes the spices on his own in the shop, maintaining cleanliness. According to him, paneer shingara is available in only their shop.
Raja Ghosh’s sweet shop is located in Mahadevpur village along the Malda-Nalagola state highway. Every day, from noon to evening, there is a huge crowd of people, who only eat paneer Shingara. An average of 1000 pieces of this tasty snack, with one of them costing Rs 10, are being sold every day. The vegetables included in this Shingara are cheese, beets, carrots, beans and other vegetables. Apart from the cheese, paneer and other vegetables, this shop also serves chutney to the customers alongside the Shingara. As a result, the taste of the food in this shop is unique from other shops.
Seeing the Bengali Shingara in the Local 18 Bengal visual somewhat gives the appearance that this snack is quite similar to the samosa. Their outer crust and shape are quite similar, strengthening this narrative. However, there are many differences between the 2 delicacies. Shingharas are light snacks that happen to be a little smaller in comparison to samosas. Shinghara’s filling is made with maida or white flour. These fillings may not be as spicy as the Samosa and a few preparations may have pointed out some sweetness in the Shinghara as well.
