In Bengal's Murshidabad, Prices Of Hilsa Drop Ahead Of Jamai Sashti
Hilsa fish is available in the various markets of Murshidabad district at Rs 1000 to 1200 taka per kg.

Jamai Sashti is one of the important Bengali rituals where all the Bengali mothers-in-law prepare a feast for their sons-in-law. This year, it will be celebrated on June 8 and the food will include an assortment of Bengali delicacies to be served to the son-in-laws. As per Local 18 Bengal, before this festival, the rates of the Hilsa Fish have witnessed a decline in the market. Hilsa fish is available in the various markets of Murshidabad district at the price of Rs 1000 to 1200 taka per kg. The people of West Bengal are delighted to see a massive supply of this delicacy at such a low price.

Due to the decline in the prices in the Murshidabad district, people hailing from Pubali and other places have assembled in huge numbers here to purchase the Hilsa fish. Some of the fishermen have claimed that the supply of hilsa fish in 2024 is going to be about five times higher than the earlier time. The rates of the Bengali delicacy being sold in the Murshidabad district are as follows-

1. 1 Kg to 1 1/2 Kg Hilsa fish- Rs 1,000 to 1,200 taka per kg

2. 700 to 800 gram Hilsa- Rs 1,200 to 1,400 taka per kg

3. 300 to 600 grams Hilsa- Rs 600 to 700 taka per kg

The only thing that is of concern to the Hilsa fish sellers in the Murshidabad district is the non-arrival of the Hilsa fish from Bangladesh. Sellers believe that the stock of this dish will be available in even more amounts if there is a sufficient supply of Hilsa fish from Bangladesh.

Despite the massive availability of fish in the market, there are claims that the middle class will not be able to afford it. A report which surfaced some time back claimed that the rates of the Hilsa fish had increased, especially in the Cooch Behar’s Bhabaniganj market. In an interview with the Local 18 Bengal, Ajay Bhagat, a fish seller said, “Currently, Hilsa fish weighing 800 to 900 grams is being sold in the market for around Rs 1,200 to Rs 1,800. There is a possibility that the price will increase a little more during Jamai Sashti. But the sellers are relieved about one thing, i.e., – a sufficient supply of Hilsa fish from Bangladesh will be available in the market.”
