Hyderabad to get its science city

Hyderabad is likely to get its’ own ‘science city’ which will be established jointly by the central and the state governments at a cost of nearly Rs 100 crore.

The science city will be of international standards with ultra-modern concepts and is expected to attract at least 10 lakh visitors annually.

If the proposed project is implemented then Hyderabad will join the club of Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Chennai and Chandigarh, where such science cities are already functioning.

The science city will not be only an entertainment park, but also a science hub. It will have facilities for research and development in various fields of science-- space, nuclear, information technology, robotics and bio-technology.

For visitors, it will have facilities and exhibits like a space theatre, a digital planetarium, a 3D vision theatre, a time machine, an amphitheatre, a laser theatre, a heath gallery, flight and earthquake simulators, space and aviation and energy parks, a dinosaur park along with concepts like science of sports and fun science.

The science city will portray the growth of science and technology and their application in industry, human welfare and environment.

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) will develop the science city through a public private partnership (PPP) mode.

HMDA officials told Express that the ministry of science and technology is promoting new science cities in state capitals and other major cities.

The central government will finance the projects and the state governments have to provide land and basic infrastructure like water and power free of cost.

During the executive committee meeting of HMDA held recently it was decided to appoint an advisor.

The selected developer will design, finance, construct, engineer, operate and maintain the project during a predefined concession period and transfer all the project assets in full working condition to the authority.

“The main aim of establishing a science city is to promote science,” said an HMDA official.
