New Delhi: Hindi writer Manohar Shyam Joshi, famous as the Father of Indian Soap Operas, died in Delhi on Wednesday night. He was 73.
Joshi wrote Hum Logand Buniyad, India's first TV operas which had millions of Indians glued to their TV sets.
When Hum Log went on air in 1982, TV was still a luxury for most Indians.
The serial, which dealt with the everyday lives of common people, was a huge hit and every Indian could identify with it.
Buniyad, Joshi's next hit, took viewers from British India, the Partition and then to independent India through a single family's history.
Joshi was a novelist and his works dealt with varied topics ranging from Kumaoni traditions (Kasap) to political satires like Netaji Kahin.
He was one of the first post-modernist writers of Hindi literature , as seen in his novel Kuru Kuru Swaahaa and his novella Hariya Hercules Ki Hairaani .
He has had a long stint as a journalist, both in the broadcast and the print media.
He served as the editor of Saptahik Hindustan and Weekend Review.
His journalistic writings covered a wide range of topics from popular science to political intrigues. He also wrote an opinion column for the Hindi weekly, Outlook Saptahik.
Joshi will be cremated at Nigambodh Ghat in Delhi at 12 pm.
