Jintao shares a good rapport with Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi.

Beijing: Chinese President Hu Jintao, who has established a personal rapport with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, was today re-elected for another five-year term in an overwhelming vote by the Communist giant's Parliament.

The National People's Congress (NPC)—China's Parliament—also sealed the appointment of Hu's likely successor Xi Jinping, 54, as Vice President.

The confirmation of the top Chinese leadership for the next five years came as Tibetan capital Lhasa witnessed the fiercest pro-independence street protests in two decades leading to rioting that left at least 10 people dead in the remote Himalayan region yesterday.

Sixty five-year-old Hu, who met Singh several times on the sidelines of international meetings and in January this year when the Indian leader visited Beijing, has established good working relations with him as well as with Sonia, also the Chairperson of United Progressive Alliance.

Sonia toured China in October last year as the guest of Hu, also the General Secretary of the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC).

Hu's re-election as President is expected to ensure that decisions taken by the two countries during recent high-level visits would be implemented, analysts said.

NPC also re-confirmed Hu, the former CPC Secretary for Tibet, as head of the Central Military Commission (CMC), a powerful organ which controls the two million-plus Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA).
