BANGALORE: After drawing flak for years, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) seems to have woken up from slumber. The Palike has managed to impress residents of Tyagarajanagar by taking a step ahead towards solving traffic woes with help of innovative technology. The 12 ft wide storm water drain lying on the road connecting Shastri Nagar and Tyagarajanagar has now been widened. Moreover, BBMP has constructed a road on top of the storm water drain. The idea was mooted by Yediyur ward corporator N R Ramesh. “The road around this storm water drain was very weak and had been causing a lot of traffic congestion. When the commissioner had visited the spot last year, we decided on this action plan and we have completed the project, which will be inaugurated on Friday,” he said. The area had lot of traffic jams after the Metro construction started in Banashankari. BBMP has widened the storm water drain to 24 feet and has built a road of the same width over it. “The latest technology has been used to construct a strong road. The road can bear vehicle weight upto 100 tones” added Ramesh. The whole project has cost BBMP an estimate of Rs 1.5 crore. The road will be inaugurated by the Mayor, Commissioner and Home Minister on Friday. This is also the first time such a modern technology has been used to build a road in Bangalore.
