CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has asked all medium, heavy goods and passenger vehicle owners to fix speed governors in their vehicles. For vehicles already registered, a High Court bench said the State government should stipulate a period of three months from Thursday for fitting the speed governors, failing which authorities should take appropriate action against violators. Drivers should not exceed the speed limit of 90 kmph on highways and in the event of violation of this directive, the transport authorities should take appropriate action immediately, including interim suspension of the permit, the bench said. The authorities should ensure by surprise checks whether the drivers were under the influence of alcohol or drugs and if it was found to be so, they should not be allowed to drive. In the event of speed governors not installed within the stipulated time, the transport authorities should not issue or renew temporary permits and should not receive taxes from the all-India permit holders, the bench added. Meanwhile, the TN Omni Bus Owners Association submitted that it had complied with the court’s order dated September 27 directing it to fix emergency exits in the rear right side of the buses. The Transport Commissioner, who was present in the court on Thursday, also confirmed it. The bench recorded the submissions and posted the case for further hearing in the first week of January 2012.
