New Delhi: American Lashkar-e-Toiba operative David Coleman Headley has been charged by the Federal Bureau of Investigation with involvement in the Mumbai terror attacks but Indian analysts suspect he has struck a deal with the FBI.
Headley, who is being tried before a Chicago court, has waived his right to a trial by a grand jury because that would have meant a protracted court proceedings.
The FBI’s charge-sheet against Headley is silent on his conviction to two years in jail in 1998 for drug peddling.
Headley could be planning to become a ‘truthful witness’ or approver and give evidence against his co-conspirators in terrorism plots. Analysts suspect the FBI trying to hush up suspicion that Headley had links with USA’s intelligence agencies and the Drug Enforcement Agency and later turned “rogue”.
Sources say when the case comes up for hearing on January 12 Headley is likely to plead guilty to some charges. The FBI will accordingly not press for other charges that could embarrass the US government.
