Bursting crackers is part of Diwali festivities. And this year ‘Harry Potter’ crackers are the flavour of the season. Followed by Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Katrina Kaif crackers, in that order.
It is interesting to note that a firang film character is generating better sales of crackers than desi stars. Nimesh Mehta of Essabhai Fireworks in Mumbai says, “Harry Potter is a kids’ hero and hence it is obvious that these are doing better than crackers with posters of our Bollywood stars.” He adds, “And let me make it very clear that none of the crackers available in the market are named after celebrities. There is nothing like Kareena bomb or Katrina fuljadi in actuality and never has been. It is just that the manufacturers of these crackers use celebrities’ photographs on the packaging of their products. Buyers recognize these crackers with the celeb names.”
But how does having an actor or actress’ photographs on the packaging help? Mehta replies, “When you present crackers of two to three brands to the customers and most times customers are enticed to check out the packet with a celebrity’s picture on it. But they may or may not buy that packet. Celebrities pictures definitely attract customers’ attention to the brand.”
So looks like we will see a lot of Harry Potters going up in flames this year.
