Jaipur: The Gujjars in Rajasthan have raised the banner of agitation once again. Community leader Colonel Kirori Singh Bainsala who lost the last parliamentary election on a BJP ticket is now taking on the Congress government in the state. He wants a freeze on recruitment for government jobs in the state till the issue of granting a 5 per cent quota for Gujjars is resolved in the Rajasthan High Court.
Col Bainsla, Gujjar leader, Gazipur, Dausa said, “The government still has some time to act.”
The Gujjar quota Bill was cleared by the Governor in 2009, after three long years of violent protests in which 70 people died. But months later the Rajasthan High court stayed the quota in jobs and educational institutions on the ground that it exceeded the overall 50 per cent reservation mark set by the Supreme Court.
Gujjar leaders are divided on the modus operandi of the protests, while Col Bainsla has told the government to act by Friday evening or face the consequences, other Gujjar leaders favour dialogue.
Gujjar leader, Jaipur Ram Swaroop Kasana said, “We don't want leaders to further their selfish interests on the sacrifice made by the members of our community...dialogue is the only way to resolve this issue.”
While the government is taking no chances in trying to reach a breakthrough with Col Bainsla, the Rajasthan High Court has directed the Gujjar leaders and the government to see to it that the protests do not take a violent turn and law and order remains intact.
