The Union government on Friday issued new proposals to punish underage drivers and their guardians.
According to sources, a guardian or owner of a vehicle is liable for offences committed by a juvenile. Also, if a vehicle is impounded, it will be treated as violation of registration conditions, as per the new proposal.
CNN-News18 has been campaigning for strict action against underage driving.
In the new proposal, a juvenile driving a vehicle will serve a sentence in a remand home in case of grievous injury of death. There will be no provision of bail if the juvenile is a repeat offender, said sources.
The move comes days after uproar over a accident in the national capital wherein a minor boy allegedly ran over a 32-year-old man with his father's Mercedes in the civil lines area. The juvenile accused was sent to police custody, making it the first case of a juvenile being subjected to custodial interrogation.
His father was also arrested, but later let out on bail.
