KOZHIKODE: The students of the Government Engineering College, West Hill, were relaxed and happy to be back on their campus on Friday, after a gap of more than two months. But their schedules are to get tight and hectic soon, as exams are closing in. The college, which lost more than 30 working days in the SFI strike to protest against the illegal admission of Nirmal Madhav, is planning to conduct special classes for the students on Saturdays and Sundays.College Principal Z A Zoya convened a meeting of the Heads of Departments to discuss special classes and the they welcomed the move. “We hope that we will complete the portions for the students without moving the exam dates,” Zoya said. The College had earlier planned to ask Calicut University for an extension of Govt Engineering College Students, Staff Heave a Sigh of Relief examination dates, considering the special circumstances of the college. “Now that we have reopened the college, we will be working in full swing to compensate the lost classes,” the principal, who was posted to the college while the issue was at its peak, said. The principal also said she has not started to calculate the damages that were caused by the violence during the protests. “Our preliminary aim was to open the college and continue with the classes which has been achieved. Now we have to calculate the damages and do the repairs,” Zoya added. Both the teaching and non-teaching staff of the college welcomed the decision of transferring the controversial student and are happy that the issue has been resolved and things are back on track. “Though we all knew the admission was not through proper channels, we were in no position to say it. We were just obeying the orders that we got from higher authorities,” a member of the office staff said. Classmates of Nirmal are also happy that there are no more ‘special’ cases among them. “In the end it is to be understood that all the loss that has arose out of the issue is to the 1,200 meritorious students who are studying at the college,” Abeesh, a student of the fifth Semester Chemical Engineering at the college, said. “I had repeated a year because of low ranks to gain admission in a government college. And I was not ready to sit with a student who had bypassed merit and gained illegal admission,” Sanalkumar P, a fifth semester Mechanical Engineering student at the college, said.‘No Decision Yet on Nirmal’s Admission’The admission of Nirmal Madhav at MEA College Malappuram is put on hold as the college authorities have claimed that the Kozhikode District Administration had not discussed the matter with the college management officials. Haji K Mammed Faisy, joint secretary of the MEA management, said that Nirmal Madhav cannot be admitted to the college. While Panakkad Syed Hyderali Shihab Thangal, who is the president of the college management committee, has said that Kozhikode Collector had called him up and discussed the issue and asked for admitting him at the college. “But there was no decision to admit him at the college and the decision would be taken only after the management committee meeting is over.
