BANGALORE: The state government has decided to withdraw the right to use of Jamma Bane land which is a part of the evergreen forests in Kodagu district, after paying compensation to the land users which was granted to them during British regime.Addressing newsmen here on Thursday, Forest Minister C P Yogeshwar said that the Britishers had granted forest land to the farmers to raise the cardamom crop in 1900 but did not transfer the right of ownership of the land. He added that the state government has decided to take back the tract of forest land. Informing that about 1,8500 acres of land is spread over Virajpet, Madikeri and Talacauvery region in Kodagu district, the minister said that the government may need about `60 to 70 crore to pay as compensation and take back the forest land “The government will take back the land from those wanting to voluntarily surrender their land,” he stated. A proposal in this regard has been discussed with Assembly Speaker K G Bopaiah and CM Sadananda Gowda who have accepted it. The matter would be taken to the state cabinet shortly for its approval, the minister said.
