Gorkha group GJM bans Bengali signboards
The Gorkhaland crisis in Darjeeling seems far from over.

New Delhi: The crisis in Darjeeling seems far from over. The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) has now issued a diktat. It says that all state government offices should replace the West Bengal signboards with those of Gorkhaland.

GJM has also demanded that number plates of all the vehicles towing in the region should carry the initials GL.

The group has set October 17 as the deadline for compliance with this diktat.

State Home Secretary, Ashok mohan Chakroborty has 'advised' the state government offices not to comply with this legally invalid demand.

He also signalled that if GJM's continued such activites, their ongoing talks with the Centre would reach a dead end.

In June this year, the West Bengal government and the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha had agreed on tripartite talks involving the Centre on the contentious issue of a separate state of Gorkhaland.

The Centre and the West Bengal government had at that time made it clear that they favour talks without any preconditions. West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya had also said that the state government favoured a political solution to the problem.

Meanwhile, the GJM had claimed that 13 parties - including the Congress, Trinamool Congress and the BJP - had unanimously decided to support the demand for a separate Gorkhaland state.
