SALEM: K Suresh Kumar, the nephew of former minister for agriculture Veerapandi S Arumugam and ex-vice chairman of Salem district panchayat, was on Monday detained under the Goondas Act by the city police’s special cell for land grabbing cases. An accused in five land grab cases and the murder of six of a family, Kumar was granted conditional bail on November 23, last year. On Monday, a 15-member team of the special cell arrested Kumar at the Kondalampatti intersection when he was returning from a marriage function near Salem. He was subsequently taken to the Central Prison.Although the detention comes in the wake of the renewed impetus on the land grab cases, Commissioner of Police K C Mahali did not specify the reason for the sudden move.Named accused no 5 in the sensational murder of six persons of a family in Dasanickenpatti on August 12, 2010, Kumar was arrested in this case by the CB-CID on October 20, 2010, and later released on bail. He was then named a co-accused with Veerapandi Arumugam in the Angammal Colony land eviction case. On August 18 last year, Kumar surrendered before the land grab cell in connection with this case. However, following a three-day custodial inquiry, he was arrested again on August 20, last year, this time based on another land grab complaint filed by Bala Mohanraj of Dasanickenpatti. Arumugam and his political assistant Koushika Boopaty figured as co-accused in this case. Though he was in jail in this connection, Kumar was formally arrested on September 4, last year on charges of annexing and raising a wall on a land adjacent to Angammal Colony that was owned by Coimbatore Jewellers. He was also slapped with another case involving the auctioning of 76.5 cents of land belonging to the Tamilnadu Cooperative Agriculture Society at Ariyampalayam. Arumugam’s family members, who were in the board of the society, allegedly conducted a fake auction of the land, thus denying the participation of outsiders. They bid `7.67 lakh for the property worth `7 crore. A case in this connection was booked on October 10, last year and Kumar was formally arrested on November 23.
