BANGALORE: Here is a classic example of how the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) can misuse its own property that is meant for other purpose. The BBMP had occupied one more than five class rooms at a Junior College for Girls maintained by the civic body. It is not clear what had made the BBMP to embark on construction of new block when the existing building (BBMP Girls High School and PU College) at Austin Town can accommodate high school as well as PU College. The old building was inaugurated by the then Minister for Municipal Administration on July 10, 1978. However, there were no details about the new building that has 16 rooms exclusively meant for Junior College. It was said that no efforts were made to utilise the new building for the last six years. “I oppose BBMP occupying the class rooms meant for Junior College,” says Sarala Mohan, Corporator of Agara Ward. Surprisingly, MLA Harris has expressed ignorance of BBMP occupying the class rooms. “I am not aware of it. I have to check it,” MLA replied.According to BBMP sources, one or two offices have been shifted to the college from Mayohall premises. “We are here since there was no space at the Mayohall office. We may be shifted to other place as soon as BBMP find an alternative accommodation for us,” says a BBMP official on condition of anonymity. Many teachers and lecturers here are not happy with condition of the premises. They complain that the BBMP authorities have failed to provide drinking water for the students. “It is not fair for the BBMP to occupy the building meant for the Junior College. If BBMP becomes an encroacher who will help us. I have also complained many a times about the acute shortage of drinking water but in vain,” says Aryapratap, lecturer (Kannada), BBMP Junior College for Girls.Echoing similar opinion, a lecturer, on condition of anonymity, says that toilets are in worst condition. “Shortage of water and choked toilets have become a daily feature here,” says the lecturer. As though it is not enough, a few miscreants have even made two holes on the compound wall to enter the premises according to their convenience. “There are occasions where we found empty liquor bottles and condoms in the premises. We have complained to Viveknagar police station about this nuisance but nothing has been done to prevent such illegal activities during night,” says Aryapratap.Meanwhile, Nayaz Ahmed, Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police, has says that he has received a complaint over the phone about the nuisance at the college premises. “I will depute policemen during the night to keep a vigil on miscreants,” says Nayaz Ahmed.
