KOCHI: The Goshree Islands Development Authority (GIDA) officials inspected two boat building yards at Aroor on Thursday in connection with a proposal to start circular ferry services connecting Ernakulam, Willingdon Island, Mattancherry, Fort Kochi and Vypeen.A highly placed official with the GIDA said that the project was being launched after a detailed study undertaken by it. “If all goes well as planned, the proposal will give a boost to the tourism industry. Initially, we are planning to introduce a boat along the route. If it proves to be a success, we will introduce more services,” he said. He added that a tender for this was invited six months ago.The envisaged boat service will have air- conditioned decks with a capacity for 20 passengers and the lower deck will have a seating arrangement for about 40 to 50 passengers. International safety standards will also be maintained,” he said. He also added that the ferry service will be offered at a higher rate taking into account the rate at which the tourism industry is booming.
