Former Mumbai Police commissioner Rakesh Maria was unware about his promotion, he was expecting it after September: Sources
He was expecting to be promoted post September.

Mumbai: Rakesh Maria on Tuesday was removed as Mumbai Commissioner of Police and was elevated to DG Home Guards and DG Civil Defence. Sources told CNN-IBN that up untill this morning, Maria was completely unaware of the government's decision to move him out.

He was expecting to be promoted post September.

Refuting allegations about his proximity to former Star India CEO and Indrani Mukerjea's huband Peter Mukerjea, sources added that Maria had not met Indrani and Peter untill the Sheena Bora case came to light.

An Indian Police Service (IPS) officer who has completed 30 years in IPS is eligible to be promoted as a DGP rank officer. They are promoted on the basis of seniority against the vacancies. The Home Ministry of Government of India decides the DGP posts for each state.

Maria was eligible for the post of DGP in 2011 itself. Maria is retiring in December 2016.
