CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu government has been urged to conduct a study for the second and third phases of Metro Rail project so that there will not be a gap between the completion of the Phase I and the start for second phase, according to former Delhi Metro chief E Sreedharan. The ‘Metro Man’, honoured by Rotary Club of Madras with ‘For the Sake of Honour Award’ on Tuesday, said that Monorail, whose capacity is only one-third or one-fourth of a normal Metro, could act as a feeder service. When queried whether he will meet authorities in the state to take up Phases II and III, he said, “I will take up the issue. They must think of taking up Phases II and III now itself.”He said studies could take 12-18 months and the least time to start a Metro is anything from two to three years.  Stating that Monorail’s capacity is only one third or one fourth of a normal Metro and the cost of operation is almost 50 per cent more, he said that state government is yet to complete a detailed study or estimate the project cost.He was also skeptical of Bus Rapid Transit System in Chennai and said it is possible only if there are wide roads, where one lane could be exclusively used for buses. Such roads are not available in Chennai, he added.Kerala Plans High-speed RailKerala government is planning a high-speed rail and the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is preparing a detailed project report for it, Sreedharan said. The tracks of the high speed trains are likely to be on elevated stretches.
