BANGALORE: Five technical state institutions providing MBA and MCA courses have approached the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) with a wish to shut down. The request is said to be currently under process.A regional member of the AICTE (Karnataka and Kerala regions), who spoke to Express on condition of anonymity said these five institutes had applied for closure online. “We can’t reveal the names of the institutes as their requests are under process. A decision on this will be made in New Delhi,” said the member. The member said these institutes had excess seats in MBA and MCA courses that could not be filled. “Courses like MBA and MCA have become supply-oriented. Without enough students, these institutes were not in a position to pay salaries to teachers,” the member said.Apparently, the AICTE earlier had a cap on the number of students that an institution could admit. “We had prescribed a limit of 540 students for each institution. However,  to increase the gross enrolment ratio the limit became redundant,” the member explained. There are 228 AICTE-approved management institutes  across the state. Out of which, 211 are private unaided institutions. For MCA, there are 89 AICTE-approved institutes, out of which 80 are private unaided.  “Those who start MBA and MCA institutes expect at least 300 per cent returns on investment. Most of them use these institutions as a ladder to reach political heights. The reality is that managements show no concern after admissions and 30 per cent of institutes have no directors,” said Dr B G Satyaprasad, Director of G T Institute of Management Studies and Research.Bangalore University Vice-Chancellor Dr N Prabhu Dev said it was high time the AICTE acted against colleges that did not meet the norms. “In the name of fancy programmes, some institutions don’t have the academic sanctity nor do they meet AICTE norms. A course like MBA, which is in demand, should have the right teaching staff,” he said.
