RAMANATHAPURAM: Five fishermen from Rameswaram were injured and their boats damaged when the Sri Lankan navy personnel allegedly attacked them while fishing near Katchativu island on Sunday. Five fishermen Mahendran of Karaiyur, Antony Samy of Naripaiyur, Dericos of Kannirajapuram, Lenin of Karaiyur and Mary Ganesh of Verkodu, had ventured into sea for fishing on Saturday. Around 631 boats had set out from Rameswaram on the same day.Meanwhile, the Lankan naval boats had surrounded Indian fishing boats near Katchativu and some Lankan navy personnel had allegedly boarded an Indian boat and smashed the glass panes with wooden logs.In the impact, Mahendran suffered multiple injuries when broken glass panes of the boat struck him. The other fishermen had sought shelter in a corner of the boat. The Lankan navy personnel warned the fishermen not to enter into their water. Mahendran was later rushed to the GH.  Meanwhile, the fishermen informed the incident to Veeran, assistant director for fisheries-Rameswaram. Following that, a tense atmosphere prevails in Rameswaram.
