New Delhi: Italy on Tuesday approached the United Nations over the prolonged detention of two of its marines in India in connection with the killing of two Kerala fishermen in January 2012.

Charges are yet to be filed in the case.
In February, India had assured Italy that the duo would not be tried under a tough anti-piracy law that provides death penalty but would still be tried in India. The two marines are on bail, but cannot leave the country.
