Kolkata: A fire broke out in a petrol pump in a commercial hub of the city on Tuesday night but firemen averted a possible disaster by dousing the flames in time.

"No flames can be spotted any more. The situation is now turning normal", West Bengal Disaster Management Minister Javed Khan, who was on the spot at Camac Street area in southern parts of the metro, said.

As the fire broke out at the pump around 8 pm, police cordoned off the entire area and took steps to prevent spread of the fire to the reservoir of the petrol pump.

Altogether 11 fire tenders were pressed into service to fight the blaze which was ignited from a vehicle, stranded nearby, sources said.

As the fire raged at a portion of the pump, police cordoned off the entire stretch, evacuated those inside a shopping mall and nearby residential complexes and the area plunged into darkness with power connection snapped as a precaution.

A number of vehicles, stationed at the petrol pump, were also burnt but there was no casualty or injury in the incident.

Disaster management and rescue teams were kept ready for emergency purpose.
