Bengaluru: Karnataka Lokayukta SP Sonia Narang on Tuesday filed an FIR against Lokayukta Justice Bhaskara Rao's son Ashwin in the multi-crore blackmailing and extortion scam. The FIR was filed against Ashwin Rao and others before the Karnataka High Court stayed the Upalokayukta's order asking her to investigate.

The probe has been suspended till the legal opinion is sought on whether to continue with the investigation.

While the High Court stay came around 1:30 PM, the FIR was filed in the morning, naming Ashwin and others in the extortion case.

Ashwin has been charged with extortion and under the prevention of corruption act.

The FIR was followed by a written complaint filed by Krishnamurthy, the engineer who had first complained that he was asked by someone in the Lokayukta's office to pay Rs 1 crore to avoid a raid. Worried about his safety, Krishnamurthy did not file any complaint earlier.

Ashwin allegedly summoned government officials -- such as Krishnamurthy -- to the Lokayukta's office to demand money and avoid raids.

The Lokayukta's office has been under a cloud over the past month, with allegations of serious corruption against it.
