CHENNAI: Asked why signals had not warned the driver of the speeding MEMU to stop at a point ahead of the stationary passenger train near Chitteri, divisional security officer Christopher Prabhakar said, “The precautionary signal lights would have indicated that he is to proceed only at a speed of 15 kmph. However, the failure to stick to the prescribed speed limit has led to the accident.” Asked about anti-collision devices, Prabhakar said, “These devices are being tested. In this section, testing is complete and would be implemented soon.” Additional divisional railway manager John Thomas also agreed that the evidence strongly pointed towards driver’s error. “The signal would have been red as there was another train waiting on the same line. It seems he overlooked this,” he said.As per railway sources who have worked with Raj Kumar, the severely injured driver of the MEMU, he was an accomplished driver who took his work seriously.
