HYDERABAD: The logjam on who should be the mayor of Hyderabad after Banda Karthika Reddy demits office in the first week of December, continues.MIM, which claims that the mayor's post should be held by its member for at least two years from now on, is keen that Karthika Reddy should step down paving way for MIM to install its candidate as mayor.MIM floor leader in the Assembly, Akbaruddin Owaisi, along with his party MLAs, met chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Saturday morning and is understood to have told him that time has come for the MIM to post its man as the mayor of Hyderabad. The Congress is apparently not ready to vacate the mayor seat at the end of the first twoyear term as per the agreement reached between the two parties after the GHMC elections in 2009.The MIM would then take its turn and nominate its candidate as mayor for the next two years. And, the Congress would get the seat back in the final year of the fiveyear term as both the parties do not have requisite strength of their own in the 150member civic body to stay in power. The Congress leaders feel that as the understanding was that the MIM should have its man as the mayor for only two years, the Congress should be allowed to continue its candidate as mayor for one more year and leave the last two years to the MIM.Akbarduddin, when he met PCC president Botcha Satyanarayana on Friday, made it clear that the Congress should be prepared to vacate the mayor's chamber. Satyanarayana said he would leave it to the chief minister to decide on the issue.According to sources, Karithaka Reddy is keen on continuing in the post for at least one more year and brought pressure on Satyanarayana to convince the MIM allow one more year to the Congress so that they could have their mayor for the last two years. Akbaruddin, who is keen on wresting the mayor's position from the Congress now itself, made it clear about his party's intention to the chief minister. Sources said the chief minister also appeared to have been convinced with Akbaruddin's argument and did not want to rub him on the wrong side at a time when the noconfidence motion of the TDP is coming up in the Assembly in the first week of December. MIM is an ally of the Congress in the Assembly. This apart, Secunderabad MLA Jayasudha too is reportedly canvassing with the chief minister against continuing Banda Karthika Reddy as she has a running feud with her.As Tarnaka division, which Karthika Reddy represents in the GHMC council, is part of Secunderabad Assembly constituency, Jayasudha wants Karthika Reddy to be stripped of her mayoralty.
