New Delhi: Switzerland's Roger Federer is now just two steps away from equalling Bjorn Borg's record of five consecutive Wimbledon men's singles titles.
The world No. 1 disposed off former French Open and 20th seed Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain in four sets on Friday to march into the semi-finals in the men’s singles at the Wimbledon.
Federer, who resumed his match at five-games all from Thursday won the first set in a tie-break 7-6 (2).
Though Ferrero showed some fight by winning the second 6-3, Federer stepped up a gear to take the next two 6-1 and 6-3 to enter the semi-final where he will face France’s Richard Gasquet of France.
The 21-year-old Frenchman shocked No. 3 Andy Roddick of the US in their quarter-final match to make it to the semis at the Wimbledon for the first time.
The quarter-final between Gasquet and Roddick started with the Americans winning the first two sets in a little over an hour. But after that the match completely turned around in favour of Gasquet and the 12th seed battled hard to take the next two sets 7-6, 7-6.
The fifth set also went the same way and Gasquet finally completed the win in nearly four hours with a scoreline of 4-6, 4-6, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (3), 8-6.
Earlier Rafael Nadal bulldozed his way to the semi-finals at the Wimbledon beating Tomas Berdych in straight sets on Centre Court.
The seventh seeded Berdych gave Nadal a fight in the first set taking it to a tie-breaker but after that it was the Spainard all the way.
Berdych lost the second set 4-6 and simply gave up in the third losing the match 7-6 (1), 6-4, 6-2.
With the win Nadal entered his second semi-final at the Wimbledon where he faces Serbia's Novak Djokovic.
Djokovic won a marathon five-setter against Cyprus' Marcos Baghdatis in the quarter-finals.
After winning the first two sets Djokovic looked like he would pocket the third as well but Baghdatis had other ideas.
He turned it all around in the tie-breaker of the third and then won the fourth set 6-4.
Baghdatis carried the momentum into the decider before Djokovic recovered to take the fifth set and entered the semi-finals winning the match 7-6 (4), 7-6 (9), 6-7 (3), 4-6, 7-5.
It was Djokovic's best performance at the Wimbledon. Nadal and Djokovic have played each other two times before with both of them winning one match each.
