New Delhi: As the lights wane on the year that goes by and we welcome the New Year, crime may not be the best thing to talk about.

But 2006 was one such year when the high and mighty crime perpetrators met their nemesis.

Delhi became the showcase of a select few ones, despite all their 'power and pelf', with a Union minister, son of a politician and that of an IPS official sentenced to life for their involvement in murder cases.

The conviction of Union Coal Minister Shibu Soren was the first ever case when a serving Cabinet minister was convicted.

Soren was sentenced to life imprisonment in connection with the murder of his personal secretary Shashinath Jha.

In another unprecedented event, Manu Sharma, son of a powerful senior Congress politician Venod Sharma, was handed out life imprisonment for killing model Jessica Lall in a posh South Delhi restaurant in April 1999.

The 'almost dead' case was brought to life following protests by civil society against the acquisition of the accused by a lower court.

Two of his accomplices, including Vikas Yadav, son of an influential politician and former Parliamentarian D P Yadav (and Amardeep Singh Gill alias Tony - an executive in a multinational firm) were sentenced to four years in prison for conspiracy and destruction of evidence in the murder.

The third in the 'high profile cases' to have hit the headlines, involved the son of an IPS official.

The Priyadarshini Mattoo murder case, which had lingered for more than ten years, accused Santosh Singh was also given life imprisonment for murdering the Delhi University law student on January 23, 1996.
