Thiruvananthapuram: A 57-year-old farmer hanged himself outside a Village Administrative Office in Kerala's Kozhikode district after the officials refused to accept his land tax for the lack of property deed. He is survived by his wife and three children, police said.
Kaavilpurayidathil Joy's tried to deposit tax over the past year-and-a-half as the officials continued stonewalling his efforts, saying his property was a disputed one. Joy wanted the receipts of the property tax so that he could pawn his land to help support his children's education.
This was not the first time when Joy had tried to pay his property tax. His family had earlier sat on a dharna as well to persuade officials.
Joy's family has alleged that he had warned the officials of committing suicide if they didn't accept his tax.
Village Council chief Shiji said the state authorities were requested to extend a helping hand to the family. "We requested them to provide a state government job to one member of the deceased's family."
Shiji also said that it was understood that Joy had taken a loan of Rs 10 lakh.
Kozhikode district collector U V Jose said that the village officer and assistant village officer have been suspended pending enquiry.
State Revenue Minister E. Chandrasekheran on Thursday said the incident was most unfortunate.
"The district collector has been asked to find out what happened and we will ensure that all steps are taken against erring officials at the village office," IANS quoted Chandrasekheran as saying.
Revenue officials from various places have been reported to have declined to accept land tax from farmers, citing various technical issues.
State Power Minister M.M. Mani, who arrived at the residence of Joy on Thursday, said that he has spoken to the district collector. Mani assured justice to Joy's family.
"The state cabinet will take a compassionate approach in this case and will do the needful," Mani told the media.
Deputy collector land and Revenue is inquiring into the matter and a report will be submitted soon.
