CHITTOOR: Mango farmers who labour to bring this delicious fruit to people are now very worried that they may not get a good price for their produce this year. This is due to slump in international market for mango pulp, which is main source of market for mangoes grown in Chittoor district.The district leads in mango production in the state, with an annual production of 6 lakh tonnes and is grown in an area of 30,000 acres.With most of varieties being grown by the farmers in the district are pulp varieties, 80 percent of the mangoes are supplied to pulp industries, while the remaining is sold in domestic market and a small quantity is exported.There are 68 pulp industries including 3 in corporate sector in the district, which are the main buyers of mangoes from the farmers of the district and also 11 other districts in the state.Ninety percent of the pulp produced in the district is exported to countries including, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar.Due to many reasons including the change in food habits in these countries has resulted in export slump last year resulting in nearly 50 percent mango pulp remaining with them. Of the total 3 lakh tonnes of pulp produced, only 1.6 lakh tonne was exported.
